What Are AI Games?
AI Games are games that use Artificial Intelligence to enhance the player experience. They include everything from simulated environments that respond to player input to intelligent NPCs that adapt and grow with the player, making the gaming experience more personal, 92 Jeeto, and immersive.
Historically the main use of AI in games has been with non-player characters (NPCs) who follow strict rules designed to mimic intelligence and adhere to a scripted interaction with the player. These AI algorithms are now getting a makeover with generative AI that allows the NPCs to develop, grow and change as the game continues, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting.
Designing Horror Games with Responsive AI
Gen AI can also be used to create a dynamic & evolving game world that adjusts based on the players actions & behavior, delivering an infinite amount of content possibilities that keep the game interesting. The game world may shift in difficulty, add new environments, new characters or rework the narrative to match the players progress, ensuring that the player is constantly challenged and engaged.
A great example of this is Tacoma – a science fiction survival horror game from Fullbright which immerses the player in an abandoned space station where they must interact with ODIN, the ship’s onboard AI to find out what happened to its crew. While this is not a pure AI game, it uses many of the same technologies including decision trees & Monte Carlo tree search algorithms that are typically found in more complex video games to create an intelligent and engaging NPC.
